In our hotel room there's an area between the closet and dresser that stayed nice and dark and was separate from our room, so we at first put her crib there. But it was also near the door and Astrid would wake up at every sound (i.e., loud woman talking on her cell phone in the hallway, a kid running down the hall screaming "Daddy!", doors slamming shut). So I had to move her crib and couldn't have any lights on in our room or make any noise as to not wake her.
Last night, on our last night in San Fran, after putting Astrid to bed we called John's room and he left the phone connected so that we could use the phone as a baby monitor and go down to his room on the 7th floor (we were on the 10th floor) for a couple hours. The phone as a baby monitor worked pretty well. We could hear the sleepy sheep playing (ocean waves that lull the baby to sleep) and if she would have woken up and made noise we would have heard her. It felt like we were at home using a baby monitor and it was the first time both of us got to kick up our heels and relax. Astrid slept soundly and didn't even stir when we came back into our room.
