Good movies

I was channel flipping tonight and came across the movie "The English Patient" on UPN's channel 13. I remember seeing this movie when it first came out in the movie theater and being so moved by it. It's one of my all time favorite romance stories and the movie itself is beautiful to watch.

There is one scene where Kip, the minesweeper (played by Naveen Andrews) surprises Hana, the nurse (played by Juliette Binoche) by taking her to an old, abandoned church at night. He gives her a flare and suspends her in the air with some ropes which he maneuvers from below. You can feel her happiness as she gazes at the exquisite murals painted on the walls and squeals with delight. I remember bursting into tears when I saw this scene because this simple act was so touching and sweet and romantic.

When saying their goodbyes the unlikely couple (Kip and Hana) tell each other that they will go back to the church. Hana says she will always remember her paintings and maybe one day they will meet again. Their romance is brief and it's only a subplot but no less meaningful.

And then there is the love story between the two main characters. Mama mia. It's a tumultuous one that's heartbreaking and worthy of many tears from the audience.

It's one of the few movies I actually paid to watch again at the movie theater.

Others must have loved it too because it won 9 Oscars (and was nominated for even more):

Whatever happened to Juliette Binoche? The last movie I saw her in was "Chocolat" but I haven't seen her in anything recently. According to imdb.com it looks like she's been in some French movies.

Naveen Andrews who played Kip stars in the TV series "Lost". He plays Sayid, the Iraqi character. He wasn't immediately reconizable with out the turban.

Ralph Fiennes has a part in the new Harry Potter movie, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and he's also the voice of Lord Victor Quartermaine in the clay animation movie "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit".

The last movie I saw Kristin Scott Thomas in was "Gosford Park".

Seems like good movies like this are few and far between.
Has anyone seen any good movies recently?

I highly recommend "The March of the Penguins". A truly beautiful documentary about the Emperor Penguins and their journey. The tagline is: "In the harshest place on Earth, love finds a way."
